An Unpredictable Revolution

August 1st, 2010

The folks from Mimco recently asked me to join ‘An Unpredictable Revolution’ – a promotion they’re doing for their latest collection, which is in stores this July.  They asked me to choose a piece from the collection, I picked out a gorgeous bug brooch, then incorporate that into a visual or written interpretation of one of the following themes: ‘Darkness Becomes Her’, ‘Tortured Elegance’, ‘Twisted kinship’ or ‘Minimal Overload’.

I chose Tortured Elegance because it’s inspired by Marie Antoinette and she is one of my ultimate style icons.  I made a little set up using the backdrop from Happy Birthday Dropstitch and styled it with a few pieces of jewellery and ornaments I thought you might find in Marie Antoinette’s boudoir.

Perth Fashion Festival Program Launch

July 28th, 2010

WA designer Jaime Lee Major (winner of X-Press Fashion Graduate Award in 2008)

September is my favourite month of the year for one reason – the Perth Fashion Festival. Today the team at PFF launched their program for the 2010 festival which runs from September 9-15. This year I’m involved in a fair few facets of PFF – I’m judging Student Runway with Claire Davies from STM and Tane Andrews from Of Cabbages & Kings; I’m co-styling ReStyle – an event designed to show people how fashionable op shop outfits can be; and I’m somehow involved in a new event called 15 Minutes which is all about the rise of the fashion blogs – I’ll get back to you about that one. There are a few other things too but I can’t tell you about them… yet! For the full rundown on all things PFF head to their website here.

Holga At Home

July 27th, 2010

I try to take my Holga camera along to as many photoshoots as possible because I love the unpredictable effects it creates on images. I shot 3 rolls of film during my recent photoshoot with Cameron Etchells, here are the results. Because you have no control over focus on Holgas (and my lens is jammed so I can’t change the depth of field) I never know whether the photos will look any good but the mystery is rather fun.

Home Time – Behind The Scenes

Emily from Scene wears Illionaire dress from Billie & Rose, stylist’s own vintage necklace

Last Thursday I started work on my latest ‘passion project’ with photographer Cameron Etchells, MUA Constance Bowles and hair stylist extraordinaire Melissa Cook. The basic premise was to style girls to match suburban houses around Fremantle – here are some behind the scenes snaps for your viewing pleasure. Thanks to Emily Bathgate @ Scene Models, Alanna and Monnica at Catherine Ruze Agency, plus Tansie and Pamika for posing for the shots, and to Billie & Rose, Winifred & Bance and Awoke On A Whale Heart vintage for lending me their lovely garments. Stay tuned for the final snaps.

Thanks to all the lovely people who came along to Happy Birthday Dropstitch at Pigeonhole last night! I hope you enjoyed the photos, cupcakes, chocolates and long-necks. Working For The Weekend

July 15th, 2010

This weekend’s going to be a ripper – Happy Birthday Dropstitch is set to go down from 7pm-11pm on Friday night at Pigeonhole; then on Sunday, another Huge Vintage Sale will take over Royal Park Hall on the corner of Charles and Vincent Streets.  Join me for drinks and cupcakes tomorrow night to celebrate three years of street style, then finish your weekend with a spot of vintage shopping in North Perth. Head on down to the Huge Vintage Sale from 1pm til 6pm – it’s cash only and nothing’s over $50.

In Progress

July 5th, 2010

Since I haven’t had any new street style snaps in a while I thought I’d share what I’m currently working on…

I’m constantly on the lookout for awesome locations for photo shoots and finding the perfect place isn’t always easy. It can be a bit difficult to execute original location shoots here in Perth since it’s a small city and most iconic/aesthetically rad places have been shot a zillion times before. For my next shoot I’m going to focus on some locations I don’t think have ever been in the spotlight…

I’m about to start work on a project that I’ve wanted to do for a while now, which I think I’m going to call Home Is Where My Heart Is. The idea is to shoot 10 different girls styled to match 10 different suburban houses around Perth. Simple concept but I think it will be a really fun styling challenge. Fashion photographer extraordinare Cameron Etchells has volunteered his photographic services and we’ve picked our first five houses so all that’s left to do now is shoot, which we’ll be doing next week. Until next time…

Happy Birthday Dropstitch

June 29th, 2010

To celebrate three years of Perth street style on Dropstitch I’ve decided to hold an exhibition/birthday party on Friday, July 16, where I hope to meet as many readers as possible! Happy Birthday Dropstitch will go down at Pigeonhole in the Bon Marche Arcade (80 Barrack Street in Perth),  from 7pm – 11pm, featuring my favourite 20 photographs from the many hundreds on Dropstitch. Come along to check out who made the cut and vote for your favourite street style snap, plus just by walking through the door you’ll earn yourself a $10 gift voucher for online boutique Manikinn and go into the draw to win an awesome door prize featuring products from FashionWA, Pigeonhole and Manikinn; huzzah! The lovely folks from Fitzgeralds have printed all the snaps for me and Team Pigeonhole have volunteered their skills so I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a rather dandy night… Dress in your best because I’ll have a photobooth set up – I can’t wait to snap you all!
