Les Corbeaux designer Kristy Correy revealed her style icons, inspiration and the highs and lows of being a Perth based designer in a recent chat with Dropstitch….
What does the name Les Corbeaux mean?
It means ‘The Ravens’; I have a bit of an obsession with Paris and a weird fear of birds!
Your current collection, We Need the Eggs, calls on many beautiful silhouettes than can be considered quite retro; What inspired the looks in this collection?
This collection was hugely inspired by the Woody Allen films of the ’70s, Annie Hall in particular. I love New York in this era and the quirkiness of his films.
Which is your favourite piece in the current collection?
My favourite piece is the shift dress in the gold brocade fabric, I just think that it looks super cute on and is trans-seasonal.
Do you love or hate being a Perth based designer?
It has its good and bad points! Perth is ‘so hot right now’, so in that respect, it is very beneficial to the label and I now have an agent to do my selling for me so I don’t have to deal with that. It’s more the courier costs that are a pain!
Who are your style icons? Any designers in particular who you emulate?
Chloe Sevigny, Zooey Deschanel, Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, YSL.
Who are your favourite local/national designers?
Dapple-Grey, Miyoko, Bim Kenesis, Gurf & Lame-o.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome to get where you are now as a designer?
Everything in this business has been a challenge… from the pattern making to the ‘bas’ statements and the only way I have gotten to where I am is by surrounding myself with the people in “The Ballroom” who have always been at my side with a drink on standby to celebrate the good and the bad times!
Where’s Les Corbeaux stocked?
What does the future hold for the label?
The label is actually undergoing a transformation into a more casual aesthetic, with a new identity and website in the pipelines (designed by the talented http://www.evileltron.com.au/)- the future is looking fun!
