Designer Emily Wills recently had a chat with me about her Perth based label Miyoko. Find out more about the label below:

As a young, Perth based designer, what are the biggest challenges you’ve faced to get where you are now?

Being resilient in the face of temporary impending doom (which happens all the time) and cash flow; but I think they’re both a ‘normal’ part of any small business operation.

Which is your favourite piece in the “Yesterday’s News” collection?

All the slouchy stretch pieces but particularly The Pink Flamingos Pantaloon; an essential item for acrobatics, interpretive dance & tumbling weekends!

Is being based in Perth a blessing or a hindrance for you?

A bit of both; I couldn’t do it without the friendships of local designers I share this town with. The people I share my studio with are a blessing.

Where does the name Miyoko come from?

Miyoko is my cat’s namesake, but also means ‘beautiful child’.

Three words to describe the “Yesterday’s News” collection:

Energetic, tumbletastic, tease.

What does the future hold for Miyoko?

A clothing collaboration with jewellery label Dappled Grey is on the horizon!

Where is Miyoko stocked?

In the great state of WA, Miyoko can be found at Method – Mt Lawley, LaLa Orange – Northbridge, Love in Tokyo – Fremantle, Frankie & Johnny – Bunbury and online at YTBA and Suede & Sable.

Finish this sentence: Perth fashion is…?

Perth fashion is winning friends and influencing people.
