Last night I had the pleasure of attending Wild At Heart, an event hosted by Perth’s most illustrious high-end boutique – Elle in Claremont. I’ve never been brave enough to venture into Elle before because I figure I can’t afford/fit into anything, so needless to say I was pretty nervous about attending the event. For some ridiculous reason I was half expecting to have a Pretty Woman moment where I would walk into the store only to be told by some snooty chick wearing a head-to-toe designer ensemble that I couldn’t afford anything, and then I would get the opportunity to live out one of my dreams and say: “big mistake, HUGE!”… which would have been embarrasing but also pretty great. Anyway, thank goodness that didn’t happen!
I rocked up wearing my finest pair of pastel blue creepers in a vintage dress with aqua-coloured hair (so I stood out like a sore thumb) and as I walked through the crowd, who were adorned primarily in fur, black body con dresses and more bling than you can poke a Kardashian at, I thought to myself ‘be brave, think of Meg Gray and her awesome pink hair and Jenny Kee and her flamboyant prints and personality’. I figure that before those ladies were famous they must have felt like they stood out amongst the black, drapey fashion crowd, which brought me a bit of comfort. Turns out I really shouldn’t have worried – the show was really great and very tongue-in-cheek – it started with a hilarious soundbyte from Zoolander – and the music consisted of Gorillaz, Black Keys and a bunch of other awesome bands, which was a welcome suprise.
Turns out you really shouldn’t judge a book (or high end boutique) by its cover!
