Elle backstage at the Jaime Lee Major show

Last Tuesday night after 15 Minutes, three extremely talented West Australian designers closed the Perth Fashion Festival with Up! The Finale. Featuring collections by Jaime Lee Major, Kirsten Shadbolt (Paper Skye) and Ali Cotton (Joveeba), the show celebrated the work of designers at varying stages of their careers, who are making waves with their creations.

Jaime Lee Major’s collection was on show first and the audience was immediately mesmerised by her designs and the pink aliens modelling them. Jaime has come so far since graduating from Central TAFE (now Central Institute) a few years ago and I think she’s going to do big things in the coming years. I love her eye for colour and the beautiful watercolour patterns that adorn her designs.

Contrasting dramatically to Jaime’s hot pink creatures from outer space, Kirsten’s Paper Skye collection was demure, elegant, feminine and refined.  Taking inspiration from Jersey Girls, the Paper Skye show was full of powdery pinks, chalky greys and nudes, with stunning ruffles and detailing. I love how wearable Kirsten’s collection is – I hope to see lots of ladies wearing her designs around Perth in the coming months.

Having recently secured a coveted international distribution deal, Joveeba is taking the international fashion industry by storm, and at Up!, Ali Cotton proved why her WA born label has become one to watch. Inspired by the beach and Australian surf culture, Ali’s designs were carefree, colourful and modern; perfect for hot summer days and balmy nights. I particularly loved the fringed necklaces and bangles that featured in Ali’s show and I’ve since found out that they were designed by Jocelyn Tan, whose work is currently on display at Beyond Garment.
